weather
did you know blue skies and red sunsets share one explanation?
air scatters short wavelengths much more strongly.
about 4.4×
stronger scattering: 450 nm versus 650 nm
an illustrative comparison using the Rayleigh approximation.
- mixed sunlight
- blue scatters away
- redder direct sunset
the idea
sunlight contains a range of colours. air molecules scatter short visible wavelengths more strongly than long ones, sending blue light across the sky. a longer journey through air removes more of that blue from the direct beam.
how it works
when the Sun is low, its light passes through a longer stretch of atmosphere. much of the short-wavelength light is scattered away from the direct path, leaving that beam richer in reds and oranges.

why does light come from the whole sky?
sunlight contains a range of colours. air molecules scatter short visible wavelengths more strongly than long ones, sending blue light across the sky. a longer journey through air removes more of that blue from the direct beam.
without scattering, most sunlight would arrive directly from the Sun. molecules redirect a small amount in other directions, including towards your eyes when you look away from the Sun.
take the long route at sunset
when the Sun is low, its light passes through a longer stretch of atmosphere. much of the short-wavelength light is scattered away from the direct path, leaving that beam richer in reds and oranges.
the sky is not simply violet because the result also depends on the Sun's spectrum, atmospheric transmission, and the way our eyes respond to different wavelengths.
how much more strongly does blue scatter?
in the Rayleigh model, scattering strength varies approximately as one over wavelength to the fourth power. comparing 450 nm blue with 650 nm red gives a ratio of about 4.4.
scattering ∝ 1/λ⁴; blue/red ratio ≈ (650/450)⁴ ≈ 4.4
why are clouds often white?
- cloud droplets are much larger than air molecules. their scattering is less strongly selective across visible wavelengths, so the combined light often looks white.
- dust, smoke, humidity, and cloud cover complicate actual sunset colours. the molecular model supplies the core idea, not every detail.
